Learn Hand Embroidery in Brighton: Classes for All Levels

Next workshop: Saturday 30th of May, email Stephie at info@stephieanndesign.co.uk to book

Hand embroidery is enjoying a huge revival — not just as a craft, but as a mindful and creative way to slow down. My introduction hand embroidery classes in Brighton & Hove are great for total beginners or craft gift experiences.

At StephieAnn, I run small group embroidery workshops in my Hove studio. You’ll learn the basic stitches, classic techniques and decorative details. Whether you’re a solo stitcher looking to join a public workshop, or wanting to book a private session.

Embroidery Classes for Beginners

My introduction to embroidery workshops are designed with beginners in mind – perfect if you’ve never picked up a needle before. We start with the essentials: backstitch, satin stitch, and chain stitch, before moving on to a few knots, ending with some decorative classics. By the end of the class, you’ll have a great grounding in embroidery, top tips, and key info on how to take your embroidery further.

Public Workshops

Public workshops are held 3–6 times a year, depending on demand. Many solo attendees are keen to develop a new skill. Rather than scheduling fixed dates, I maintain a waiting list for those interested. Once enough names are on the list, I contact everyone to arrange a date that works for all.

Workshops are kept small, with just 3–5 participants, allowing me to provide plenty of one-to-one guidance and support. To join the waiting list, use the form at the bottom of this page or send a message to info@stephieanndesign.co.uk

a StephieAnn Embroidery Workshop: What to expect

Before a Class

I love to set the scene before everyone arrives — laying out colourful threads, putting on calming background music, and arranging example hoops and putting out a few snacks. Popcorn and custard creams are on the menu with plenty of tea!

My Favourite Stitch to Teach

There are a few hand embroidery stitches where I can see people’s eyes light up, thinking, “Ah, I get it! I can see how this works and how I could use it.” Everyone loves how pretty a whipped backstitch is, how simple the satin stitch feels, and how adorable woven wheels look.

The hardest Stitch!

Everybody is different, and during the first stitch, I’m assessing each person’s skill level and thinking about which stitches they might enjoy most. Some people pick up techniques really quickly, while others find certain stitches trickier. Personally, I always find French knots a bit fiddly!

Advice for Beginners

Yes, there are stages to embroidery, but the rules aren’t set in stone. Find your own way and discover the method that works best for you. Everyone has their own “handwriting” and unique embroidery style. Don’t aim for perfection — improvise, experiment, and enjoy the process. The best thing about embroidery? Mistakes can always be unpicked!

Common Fears

One of the biggest worries I hear is, “I’ve never done this before — what if I can’t do it?” Many arrive convinced they don’t have the patience, creativity, or “neat hands” for embroidery. Most attendees are complete beginners, so we start together at the same level. I take things slowly, and I’m not worried if we run over time. Many students film me demonstrating stitches so they can replay them later with confidence.

What You’ll Take Away

  • Your embroidery hoop and needle to continue at home
  • A selection of threads to keep you going
  • A pack with all the stitches covered and instructions
  • Suggested embroidery templates and ideas with stitch suggestions and dissolvable fabric to try these at home
  • Support afterwards! You’re always welcome to get back in touch if you get stuck, or pop in the shop if you have any follow-up queries

Custom Embroidery Workshops – Bring Your Own Ideas

If you have a theme you’d like to explore, a project you’ve started, or an idea in mind, you’re more than welcome to bring it along. I’ll help you adapt ideas into embroidery and suggest stitches that work best. If you already have something specific in mind, we can even create a personalised workshop. In the past, I’ve run bespoke sessions for embroidering children’s jumpers with personalised names and beadwork.

“Great embroidery course here!! Really enjoyed it and Stephie was very calm and patient with someone who can’t even sew a button on a shirt. Would definitely recommend this course for anyone who fancies giving embroidery a go!Alisa

“I had such a great time at Stephie’s hand embroidery workshop on Saturday! Her shop is lovely, and she was incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and patient. The in-person guidance was so helpful and it made a huge difference compared to just watching online videos. I am now excited to get started on my first embroidery piece! Highly recommend!Emily
